MUMBAI/NEW DELHI – India's glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist market is showing signs of plateauing in August after a sharp surge in sales during Jun-Jul following the launch of generic products, said Sheetal Sapale, vice president-commercial at Pharmatrac at a webinar on the Indian pharmaceutical market's August performance.

"There was a significant jump that was seen in the units last month. But again, now this month, we are seeing a plateauing," Sapale said Monday. The surge witnessed between June and July for semgalutide products did not continue in August, she said.

The glucagon-like peptide-1 market, comprising solids and injectables, is valued at INR 23.33 billion as of August, with tirzepatide accounting for 62% of the market and semaglutide contributing 34%. The two therapies together account for more than 96% of the segment. The market is also seeing a clear shift towards injectable products with injectables accounting for 86% of the GLP-1 market in August, compared with 14% for solids, according to Pharmatrac's data.

Semaglutide solids saw a significant dip in August, which may indicate a shift in patient preference towards injections, Pharmatrac said. "So somewhere, we are seeing that the popularity that had moved up significantly, that is coming down. And this may be leading to preference for injections," Sapale said.

The overall Indian pharmaceutical market recorded a 10.7% year-on-year growth in value during August, with all three growth levers--price, volume, and new product launches--positive. However, volume growth was slightly subdued compared with the previous two-three months. Meanwhile, new launches boosted growth in the anti-diabetes therapy market. Insulin, which had previously declined, picked up significantly in terms of volume growth over the last four to five months.

Mounjaro maintained the number one position among brands in both monthly and annual terms, with monthly sales of close to INR 1 billion, Sapale said. Among major therapies, cardiac therapy value grew 15.1% on year in August, while vitamin, mineral, and nutraceutical therapy value rose 16.2% on year. Anti-infectives and respiratory therapies volume declined 3-8% on year in August, in line with seasonal trends.

Other therapies showed strong volume growth including heart-failure and antithrombotic therapies in cardiac care, insulin in anti-diabetes, systemic antihistamines in respiratory care, rheumatoid arthritis drugs in pain management, haircare products in dermatology, myo-inositol in gynaecology, and monoclonal antibodies across therapy areas.  End
