MUMBAI – India recorded 4.2 millimetres of rainfall Sunday, 39% below the normal of 6.8 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Sept. 6, the country received 638.8 millimetres of rains, 14% below the normal of 741.6 millimetres for the period.

Of the country's four homogeneous regions, east and northeast India, and south India registered "deficient" rains Sunday. While central India received "large deficient" rains, and northwest India registered "excess" rains Sunday.

The east and northeast region received 53% below normal rainfall at 5.1 millimetres and south India recorded 59% below normal rainfall at 2.0 millimetres. Meanwhile, central India received 61% below normal rains at 3.1 millimetres and northwest India recorded 6.2 millimetres of rainfall, 32% above the normal. 

Sunday, Andaman & Nicobar Islands received the highest rainfall at 21.7 millimetres, followed by Uttarakhand at 18.5 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. 

Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 18, "deficient" in five, "normal" in five, "large excess" in four, and "excess" in two. There was no rain in two sub-divisions, according to the data.  End
