MUMBAI – Reports claiming that the INR-375-billion coal gasification scheme has received no applications are premature, the Ministry of Coal clarified Saturday. The ministry said Talcher Fertilisers Ltd. and NTPC Ltd. have already submitted applications through the online portal. The first application window is open until Sept. 7.

The scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet on May 13, aims to promote the conversion of domestic coal and lignite into value-added products. These include syngas, methanol, ammonia and urea. The request for proposal was issued on Jul. 7 and the online application portal was launched thereafter. A pre-application conference was held on Jul. 20 to address queries from prospective applicants, it said in a release. 

The application rounds will be operated on a rolling basis. The next round will open immediately after the current round closes, and it will remain open for two months, the ministry said. The government expects the scheme to attract investments of INR 2.5 trillion-INR 3.0 trillion across around 25 projects. It is also expected to generate around 50,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The scheme is part of the government's target to achieve 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity by 2030. End
