India August power generation up 7.8% on year at 144 bln kWh

KOLKATA – India's electricity generation in August rose 7.8% year-on-year but remained nearly flat on month at 144.11 billion kilowatt-hours, data released by the Central Electricity Authority of India showed. In August 2025, total power generation from all sources stood at 133.71 billion kilowatt-hours, and in July 2026, it stood at 144.03 billion kilowatt-hours. Total electricity generation includes the power bought from Bhutan.
Thermal power generation was up 11.7% on year at 116.81 billion kilowatt-hours and nuclear power generation rose 22.4% to 5.02 billion kilowatt-hours. However, hydropower generation fell 12% to 20.69 billion kilowatt-hours, and the power imported from Bhutan rose 1.6% to 1.59 billion kilowatt-hours in August.
For Apr-Aug, total electricity produced was 710.26 billion kilowatt-hours, up 6.7% on year. India has set a total electricity generation target of 1.72 trillion kilowatt-hours for the current financial year.
