NEW DELHI – Pharmaceutical stocks are likely to be range-bound next week, with investors expected to remain selective amid mixed prospects across segments, analysts said. While differentiated and specialty products offer growth opportunities, weakness in some large-cap names and near-term technical pressure could limit a rise.

The Nifty Pharma index ended at 26,478.10 points Friday, down 1.9% this week. The index is expected to trade in a range of 26000–26700 points next week, said Jatin Gedia, vice-president and technical research analyst at Teji Mandi. He expects Granules India to remain positive, while Cipla looks weak on technical charts.

"Indian pharma remained relatively resilient this week, with the focus increasingly shifting towards companies with differentiated products and higher barriers to entry," Niharika Agarwal, research analyst at Nirmal Bang Institutional Equities, said. Domestic formulations continue to provide a steady earnings base, particularly in chronic therapies, while US generics remain a mixed bag due to pricing pressure and launch volatility, Agarwal said.

Cipla's partnership with Qilu for QL2107, a Keytruda biosimilar, provides a capital-light route to build its US biologics portfolio, although the launch will face competition from peers such as Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and Zydus Lifesciences, she said. Gland Pharma could become interesting once selling pressure from Fosun's stake sale eases, provided its European contract development and manufacturing organisation integration and US Food and Drug Administration compliance remain on track, Agarwal said. She termed the stake sale largely a "shareholding-related overhang rather than a change in fundamentals".

Cohance Lifesciences is strengthening its position in antibody-drug conjugates through investments in NJ Bio and Aruka Bio, although the key question is how quickly these capabilities translate into meaningful customer and commercial revenue, she said. Wockhardt remains an interesting story as Zaynich moves from an approval-led narrative to US commercialisation, while Glenmark Pharmaceuticals continues to benefit from its specialty portfolio, anchored by Ryaltris, Agarwal said.

"Peptides, ADCs (antibody-drug conjugates), biologics, complex injectables, and specialty products are emerging as the more attractive areas within pharma, while plain-vanilla generics face fewer structural advantages," Agarwal said. She prefers Wockhardt, Gland Pharma, and Cohance for higher upside, albeit with higher execution risk, while Cipla and Glenmark offer a more balanced way to play the specialty theme.
