NEW DELHI – The Nifty Auto index is set to trade lower in the coming week, having closed in the red for four consecutive weeks, as technical indicators flash signs of weakness, analysts said. "The index is trading below its 20-day and 50-day moving averages, keeping the short- to medium-term sentiment bearish. Rising crude (oil) prices are also adding pressure," Vatsal Bhuva, a technical and derivatives analyst with LKP Securities, said.

The sectoral index closed 0.5% lower Friday at 27710.90 points. For the week, it fell almost 4%, far worse than the benchmark Nifty 50 index, which fell a little over 1%. "The auto index has retraced more than 50% of its rally from 26575 to 29850 and is now hovering near the crucial 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level," Bhuva said. "Support is placed at 27500 while any recovery may face resistance near 28000."

Earlier this week, automobile companies disclosed wholesale sales data for the month of August. Despatches of passenger vehicles grew over 30% while those of two-wheelers grew 20%. "Retail volumes grew by over 15% YoY despite geopolitical uncertainty emanating from the Iran conflict," Kotak Securities said in a report. "The export segment remained mixed, as the OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) having higher exposure to the Middle East (West Asia) continued to see weaker trends."

Sales by Bajaj Auto, Escorts Kubota, Tata Motors, and Ashok Leyland were ahead of expectations while sales by Maruti Suzuki India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hero MotoCorp, and Hyundai Motor were poorer than expectations. The Creta maker reported a contraction in exports in August as it was impacted by the availability of shipping vessels.

Despatches of commercial vehicles benefited from improving fleet operator sentiment and the demand stimulus created by the GST cut in September 2025. "We remain constructive on the FY27 auto outlook, supported by GST-led affordability, rural recovery, premiumisation, capacity ramp-ups, exports, and rising EV penetration," Nirmal Bang Institutional Equities said in a report earlier this week. "While industry growth is likely to moderate in H2FY27 (Oct-Mar) as GST benefits enter the base, this should largely reflect base normalisation rather than a demand slowdown," it said.
