MUMBAI – The benchmark indices ended higher Friday, buoyed by positive global cues. The rise in index heavyweights Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank as well as in select metal and financial services stocks supported the indices while the fall in select information technology stocks and Bharti Airtel weighed on them. The broader market indices were mixed. The Nifty 50 ended 0.1% higher at 23897.70 points and the BSE Sensex ended 0.5% higher at 76515.43 points.

"The Indian benchmark indices rebounded after four consecutive sessions of losses, supported by easing expectations of a September US Fed (Federal Reserve) rate hike and a more favourable global risk environment," Ravi Singh, equity market expert, said. However, Singh said gains were capped by elevated crude oil prices and the continuing crisis in West Asia, with Brent crude oil hovering around $95 per barrel.

Nifty 50 heavyweights Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank closed, respectively, nearly 2% and nearly 1% higher than on Thursday. Financial services companies Bajaj Finance, Jio Financial Services, and Kotak Mahindra Bank also rose around 1?ch. Tata Steel and JSW Steel ended 1% higher. Insurance companies SBI Life Insurance Co. and HDFC Life Insurance Co. closed nearly 4% and 2% higher, respectively.

On the other hand, shares of HCL Technologies ended nearly 2% lower than on Thursday. Maruti Suzuki India closed over 1% lower after a top company official Thursday said the carmaker has a lower network stock than it would have liked heading into the festival season.

Shares of pharmaceutical major Cipla ended nearly 1% lower. The company Thursday said wholly-owned subsidiary Invagen Pharmaceuticals Inc. entered into a partnership with Qilu Pharmaceutical Co. to license and supply QL2107, a biosimilar to cancer drug Keytruda. The shares fell after global brokerage Morgan Stanley flagged concerns about the intense competition in the segment. The brokerage said it continues to be "underweight" on the stock, CNBC-TV18 reported.

The broader market indices were mixed. The smallcap indices ended 0.2-0.3% higher while the midcap indices closed 0.2% lower. Among sectoral indices, Nifty Metal was the best performer, closing over 1% higher. "Within the domestic market, the Nifty Metal sector is showing renewed strength after a period of consolidation," market expert Singh said. "The index has taken support around its key EMA (exponential moving average) and is now witnessing buying interest, indicating improving momentum in the metals space."

Swiggy ended nearly 3% higher. The quick-commerce major saw a turnover of INR 30.7 billion during the closing auction session at a price of INR 271.05, about 1% lower than the reference price at 1515 IST. Swiggy accounted for nearly three-fourths of the turnover recorded at Friday's closing auction session. This came after the announcement that Swiggy will be removed from the MSCI Global Standard Indexes Monday after the company limited its foreign ownership at 49.5%.

Shares of cable and wire manufacturers were the major laggards in the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices. KEI Industries, Polycab India, Havells India, Finolex Cables, and RR Kabel ended 4-9% lower. These shares fell after a new competitor announced its entry into the cables and wires segment. UltraTech Cement Thursday launched its cables and wires business worth INR 18 billion under the brand "Ultravolt". This is expected to weigh on stocks of other players in the sector as UltraTech Cement aims to become the second-largest company in the segment, according to brokerages. Most of the analysts are of the view that the Aditya Birla Group company is likely to spend more capital and leverage its current presence in the construction sector to scale up business.

Shares of stock exchange BSE closed over 3% higher. Stockbroking firms Billionbrians Garage Ventures and Angel One closed nearly 2% and 5% higher, respectively. These stocks rose after the Securities and Exchange Board of India proposed changes in futures and options settlement price norms. The market regulator Thursday said it will issue a consultation paper in the next one week proposing certain changes in the methodology for determination of settlement prices for F&O contracts.

APL Apollo Tubes and Vodafone Idea closed over 4% higher each to be the top gainers among Nifty 200 constituents. In the Nifty 500, The New India Assurance Co. closed nearly 18% higher to be the top gainer. Shares of Ugar Sugar Works ended nearly 9% lower after the Karnataka pollution board directed the company to shut its plant at Ugar Khurd.
