Equity Alert: US mkts up Thu; Fed's Waller hints support to keep rates unch

MUMBAI--0735 IST--Major US indices ended higher Thursday for the second consecutive session as concern about an interest rate hike eased after US Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said he was leaning towards keeping the rates steady at the Fed's policy meeting later this month if the inflation data showed that price pressures were lowering. Expectations of a rate hike at the September meeting were down to 50% from 63% just a day earlier, according to the CME FedWatch tool.

Yields on the US 10-year Treasury bonds were down at 4.77?ter hitting their highest level since November 2023 on Wednesday, according to a CNBC report. The November futures contract of crude oil ended lower on Thursday and were around $96 per barrel Friday. Rising crude oil prices have put upward pressure on Treasury yields as investors worry that energy prices will push inflation up and lead to increased interest rates, the CNBC report added.

Thursday, all three major US indices closed over 1% higher. The Nasdaq composite was supported by gains in the "Magnificent Seven" with shares of Tesla gaining over 5%, while Meta Platforms and Microsoft Corp. were up around 3?ch. Shares of Nvidia closed nearly 2% higher after the company said it would buy developer platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, according to a Reuters report. Shares of chipmaker Broadcom ended nearly 3% lower after the company reported a lower-than-expected revenue forecast for the quarter ending November.
