NEW DELHI – Water storage in 178 key reservoirs across the country was 129.87 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, down over 18% from 159.19 billion cubic metres a year ago, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The current storage accounted for 70.3% of the total live storage capacity and was over 3%  below the average storage over the past 10 years, according to the data. 

 

In the northern region, which includes Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan and has 11 water reservoirs, the total live storage capacity was 12.44 billion cubic metres, which is 62.7% of the total live storage capacity. This was substantially lower than 94% of the live storage capacity a year ago. 

 

In the eastern region, which has 31 reservoirs, total live storage capacity was at 15.21 billion cubic metres, or 69.6% of the total live storage capacity. This was lower than 71.2% of the live storage from last year. The region includes Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tripura, and West Bengal.

 

Reservoirs in the western region, which includes Goa, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, hold nearly 31.36 billion cubic metres, or 81.2% of the total live storage capacity across 58 reservoirs. This was lower than 88.2% of live storage capacity a year ago, the data showed. 

 

The water level in the central region was 39.14 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is 80.6% of the total live storage capacity, below 86.5% of live storage capacity a year ago. The central region has 28 reservoirs and includes Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

 

Reservoirs in the southern region, which includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, held 31.72 billion cubic metres or 56.8% of live storage capacity across 50 reservoirs. At this time last year, the water level was at 87.5% of the total live storage capacity.  End
