India Thursday rainfall 11% below normal; season-to-date deficit at 13%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 6 millimetres of rain Thursday, 11%  below the normal of 6.8 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Sept. 3, the country received 624.5 millimetres of rain, 13%  below the normal of 721.1 millimetres for the period.

 

East and northeast India received "deficient" rains, and the south registered "large deficient" rains. South India received 69% below-normal rains at 1.6 millimetres and the east and northeast regions received 23%  below-average rainfall at 7.3 millimetres. Northwest India recorded 5 millimetres of rainfall Thursday, slightly below the normal of 5.1 millimetres. Central India recorded 9 millimetres of rainfall, 14%  above normal.

 

East Madhya Pradesh received the highest rainfall at 42.6 millimetres, followed by west Uttar Pradesh at 15.7 millimetres, according to the weather bureau. West Rajasthan did not receive any rainfall Thursday.

 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 15, "deficient" in nine, "large excess" in four, "excess" in two, and "normal" in five. There was no rainfall in one subdivision, according to the bureau.  End
