MUMBAI – Benchmark indices ended flat after opening higher on Thursday. The index failed to hold above 24000 amid selling pressure at higher levels. A fall in select stocks and heavyweight Reliance Industries weighed on the Nifty 50, offsetting gains in HDFC Bank. Banking shares were the major gainers after the Reserve Bank of India reported better-than-expected foreign inflows through the external swap facility and foreign currency non-resident (bank) deposits. Meanwhile, information technology companies were the major drags.
The Nifty 50 ended 0.2% lower at 23873.45, and the Sensex closed 0.6% lower at 76152.86. At 1515 IST, post-continuous trading session, the Nifty 50 was flat at 23904.10. "The market's recovery attempt lost steam as supportive global cues and renewed FII (foreign institutional investors) inflows collided with lingering geopolitical tensions & elevated global yields," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note.
Banking shares supported the Nifty 50. HDFC Bank shares ended nearly 1% higher, supporting the index. Axis Bank closed 1% higher. Nifty Private Bank, Nifty PSU Bank, and Nifty Bank closed 0.4-0.5% higher. The Reserve Bank of India said the special foreign exchange swap window attracted total foreign exchange inflows of $136.38 billion as of Monday. Inflows through FCNR(B) deposits stood at $127.23 billion.
The better-than-expected FCNR(B) inflows are positive for Indian equity markets as they allow the RBI to support the rupee. The RBI has been using these inflows to intervene in the forex market and support the rupee.
In the Nifty 50, shares of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone ended 2% higher, and Tata Consumer Products, Bharat Electronics, Asian Paints, and Coal India closed around 1% higher each. Meanwhile, information technology companies Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and Wipro closed around 1-2% lower. Bajaj Auto also ended nearly 2% lower. Shares of Trent, Cipla, ITC, UltraTech Cement, Titan Co., Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, InterGlobe Aviation, Eternal, and Nestle India ended about 1% lower.
Among the sectoral indices, Nifty IT was hit the hardest, down nearly 0.9%. Nifty FMCG and Nifty Auto ended 0.6% and 0.5% lower, respectively. Meanwhile, Nifty Realty closed nearly 3% higher, the best-performing index. Nifty Media closed nearly 2% higher. All the broader market indices ended in the green. Midcap indices ended 0.3-0.5%, and smallcap indices ended over 1% higher each. Smallcap indices attracted investor interest, reflecting confidence in domestic growth prospects, according to Vinod Nair.
Solar Industries India, BSE, and SBI Cards and Payments closed over 4% higher each. GMR Airports, KEI Industries, Tata Motors, and GE Vernova T&D India closed around 3% higher each. In contrast, Multi Commodity Exchange of India ended nearly 4% lower. Godrej Consumer Products closed nearly 3% lower. The stock ended lower after the company retained its guidance for 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) on Wednesday. Analysts expressed caution over the company's execution and investment.
Brigade Enterprises ended over 11% higher to be the top gainer among the Nifty 500. Jyoti CNC Automation, Finolex Cables, and Anant Raj ended around 7% higher each. Meanwhile, shares of Deepak Fertilizers and Petrochemicals Corp. ended over 4% lower to be the worst-hit stock in the index. Ola Electric Mobility ended nearly 4% lower.
