NEW DELHI – Tilaknagar Industries Ltd., which on Wednesday announced the acquisition of a 30% stake in Black Tiger Distilleries, is open to providing further capital to Black Tiger Distilleries as the business grows, Chief Strategy Officer Ameya Deshpande said.
Tilaknagar Industries Ltd. said it will acquire the stake in Black Tiger Distilleries, which owns the tequila brand Bodega Suprema No. 5, for a total investment of INR 220 million. Of the INR 220 million investment, Tilaknagar Industries will invest INR 60 million in the first tranche, followed by INR 160 million within 12 months of the first tranche, for a 30% shareholding in Black Tiger Distilleries on a fully diluted basis. Fully diluted shares represent the total number of shares that would be outstanding and available to trade on the open market if all possible sources of conversion are exercised.
"Given the kind of business it is, the kind of product it is, the business we do expect to grow significantly over time... And thereby, there will be a need for further capital, and Tilak Nagar Industries will be there to support the company, and that's the future options as well," Deshpande told Informist.
Black Tiger launched Bodega Suprema No. 5 in Mumbai in July, with August being the brand's first full month of operations. The company plans to launch the brand in several other markets and eventually across India. Bodega Suprema No. 5 is priced at INR 4,200-5,500 per 750-millilitre bottle.
Deshpande did not provide details on the product's sales-volume target for the current financial year or the revenue expectation from it.
India's tequila industry currently stands at around 250,000 cases, Deshpande said. He expects the tequila industry to grow by double digits over the coming years. "We do expect the industry to grow double-digit, okay, at the very least, (or even) high double-digit... And obviously, given our positioning within the entire ecosystem, right, we do feel that we will be the major beneficiaries of the growth that takes place in this category. Without quantifying too much, frankly, we'll be in a better position to start quantifying over a period of time," Deshpande said. One case typically comprises 12 bottles of 750 ml each, or 9 litres.
The deal marks Tilaknagar Industries' third strategic investment in an emerging craft beverage company and its first foray into the agave category. Black Tiger Distilleries is supported by Productos Pinos de Agave, a tequila manufacturing facility in Mexico, alongside a joint venture with the Mansha Group of Companies.
Tilaknagar Industries had reported a consolidated net profit of INR 315.91 million in the June quarter on revenues of INR 22.52 billion. Wednesday, its shares ended 1.2% higher at INR 552.35 on the National Stock Exchange. End
