MUMBAI – The benchmark indices ended sharply lower Wednesday with the Nifty 50 falling below the key support level of 24000 points at the opening. A jump in crude oil prices following an escalation in the war between the US and Iran weighed on sentiment. The Brent Crude Oil November futures rose over $95 per barrel.

The 50-stock index was dragged down by a fall in index heavyweights and automobile stocks. The Nifty 50 ended 0.6% lower than Tuesday at 23914.45 points. The BSE Sensex closed 0.5% lower at 76570.35 points. The Nifty 50 closed below 24000 for the first time in more than a month.

Eicher Motors fell the most in the Nifty 50, down over 3%. Its automobile peers Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Auto, and Maruti Suzuki India fell 1-2%. The Nifty Auto slumped nearly 2% and was the worst hit among sectoral indices. Barring Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, which rose nearly 1%, all its other constituents fell. Hero MotoCorp fell the most, down nearly 5%.

Automobile stocks came under selling pressure as investors anticipated moderation in demand and higher input costs to hit margins in the second half of the financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Mar), according to analysts.

Heavyweights HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank fell nearly 2% and 1%, respectively. Information technology companies Wipro, HCL Technologies, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and Tata Consultancy Services fell 1-3%. Financial services companies HDFC Life Insurance Co., State Bank of India, Shriram Finance, and SBI Life Insurance Co. fell around 1?ch. Asian Paints fell nearly 2% amid a sharp rise in crude oil prices, a key raw material for paint manufacturers. Crude oil price was also the major reason for the fall in shares of InterGlobe Aviation, down nearly 1%. Higher crude oil price translates to higher jet fuel costs for the airline operator, hitting its margins.

Fast-moving consumer goods companies Tata Consumer Products, Hindustan Unilever, and Nestle India fell around 1?ch. Max Healthcare Institute, Bharti Airtel, Cipla, and JSW Steel also ended around 1% lower.

In the Nifty 50, Coal India closed 4% higher. The stock rose after Nuvama changed its recommendation to "hold" and raised the price target by 15% to INR 454. Nuvama expects the company's volumes to recover in the second half of the financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Jun) and prices at its electronic auctions to increase.

State-owned energy companies NTPC and Power Grid Corp. of India closed nearly 2% and 1% higher, respectively. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone and Adani Enterprises also closed nearly 2% and 1% higher, respectively. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles closed nearly 1% higher. Most brokerages hold the view that the Safari-maker outperformed its peers in passenger vehicles sales for August.

All the broader market indices ended lower. Midcap indices fell 0.5-0.7% and smallcap indices ended 0.4-0.6% down. Nifty Energy closed 0.6% higher. "Tracking negative global cues, domestic equities saw volatile trade, with mid-caps bearing the brunt," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. Vodafone Idea ended over 3% higher in the Nifty 200. The stock rose after the company announced some changes to its brand. JSW Energy closed over 4% higher in the index.
