NEW DELHI - In an era of increasing digitalisation and presence of advanced automotive technology reliant on software-led features, automobile companies must be cognizant of the challenges posed by hackers, Maruti Suzuki's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Hisashi Takeuchi said at the Automobile Component Manufacturers Association of India's 66th Annual Session on Tuesday. "Even hackers are evolving their technology and becoming more sophisticated with each passing day. So, we have to ensure that we stay one step ahead of them," Takeuchi said.

Deep localisation is a top enabler for the automotive industry, Takeuchi said, adding that the conditions for doing so have never been more favourable. "Global supply chains are being reconfigured. Cost is no longer the only consideration. Reliability and continuity have become equally important," he said.

There is a significant opportunity for India to emerge as a trusted manufacturing and supply chain hub, he said. Policy measures are in place to justify the need to invest in localisation, advanced technologies that were previously considered difficult to manufacture in India, he said.

Maruti Suzuki is currently India's biggest car exporter. For India to be able to be compete with the best in the world, quality has to become its signature, Takeuchi said. "Unless our Tier-2 and Tier-3 suppliers are capable, we can't produce world-class quality. Hence, we need to extend our focus beyond our companies to include our immediate suppliers, as well as Tier-2 and Tier-3 suppliers," he said.

Tier-2 and tier-3 suppliers operate further down the auto part value chain. They are the mid-level and foundational companies that create the parts, components, and raw materials needed to ultimately assemble a vehicle.

Even as automobile companies expand their capacities rapidly to cater to surging demand, companies need to be mindful of fluctuating demand patterns, he said. "We need to build capability to handle fluctuations. Advance planning of capacity expansion and building flexibility in manufacturing is the key to address this issue," Takeuchi said. Maruti Suzuki has been on a capacity expansion spree after the cut in goods and services tax in 2025 gave a strong boost to demand for passenger vehicles, especially for smaller cars.

At 1118 IST, shares of Maruti Suzuki traded 1.9% lower at INR 12,699 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
