--ACMA Singhania: Factories must become global benchmark in productivity

NEW DELHI – Looking beyond the concept of 'Make in India', Indian automotive component companies must focus on "Create in India", "Engineer in India", and "Innovate in India", the president of Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India, Vikrampati Singhania, said at the lobby body's 66th Annual Session on Wednesday. To bring about this change, companies must look to move higher up the value chain, take greater owenership of design, technology, and product development, Singhania said.

"Our factories must become global benchmarks of productivity and quality," Singhania said. These companies should also focus on investing in people, alongside the technology, in order to churn out better outcomes, he said.

For 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), ACMA recorded a turnover of INR 7.6 trillion, up 13% on year. This growth came on the back of focus on domestic vehicle production, steady export demand, and continued investments in manufacturing capacity and technology. "Our progress must extend across the supply chain. Our MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises) and smaller suppliers must have the opporunity and grow with us," he said.

Singhania called on the automobile component companies to become globally competitive. Exports by Indian automobile part makers improved 5% to INR 2.12 trillion in FY26, as Europe emerged as the fastest-growing market. "Our approach has to be simple: build deeply in India," he said.

India has a large and growing domestic market along with engineering talent, manufacturing capability, entrepreneurial energy, and scale. This, Singhania said, is a combination that only a few countries provide simultaneously. "The opportunity is no longer incremental, it is generational," he said.

Alongside India, currently China, the US, Japan, Mexico, and Germany are among the biggest automobile component suppliers and exporter countries. For India, China was the largest auto part supplier in FY26, followed by Japan, Germany, and South Korea. Indian companies exported the most to the US, which accounted for around a quarter of India's overall component exports.  End
