Equity Alert: Asian mkts slump as crude oil prices jump on US-Iran escalation

MUMBAI--0840 IST--Major Asian indices opened lower Wednesday after crude oil prices jumped sharply as the US launched attacks on Iran. Reports said Tehran attacked Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain in retaliation. The attacks heightened concerns and weighed on Asian markets, particularly in major oil-importing economies. Global bond yields also rose amid heightened concerns over the conflict.

November Brent crude oil futures rose for the third consecutive day and hit a high of $97.04 on Wednesday. The rise came after the US launched airstrikes on Iran, with Tehran responding with retaliatory attacks on US assets in the region, Reuters reported. Government bond yields in the region also rose, with Japan's benchmark 10-year bond yield rising more than 6 basis points to 3%. Japan's 2-year government bond yield also touched a 31-year high of 1.81%, news reports said.

South Korea's Kospi was the region's worst-performing index, falling more than 3%. Kospi heavyweights Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix were down more than 3%, dragging down the index. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell nearly 3%, while the broader Topix fell around 2% amid weakness in chip-related stocks, with heavyweight SoftBank Group Corp. down nearly 6%. Shares of Tokyo Electron and Advantest Corp. were down nearly 4% and around 2%, respectively. Mainland China's CSI 300 and Hong Kong Hang Seng were down around 1?ch.

Equity Alert: US markets end lower as oil prices, Treasury yields rise

MUMBAI--0755 IST--Major US indices extended losses Tuesday as rising hostilities between the US and Iran pushed crude oil prices higher. Further, Treasury yields globally rose to multiyear highs as markets expect central banks worldwide to raise benchmark interest rates.

The US 10-year Treasury note moved to a 20-month-high, up 3 basis points to 4.788%, according to a CNBC report. The November futures contract of Brent crude oil was up more than 2%, rising to $96 per barrel after the US launched airstrikes against Iran on Tuesday and Iran responded by attacking US assets in Jordan, Bahrain, and Iraq, according to a Reuters report.

"Following Kevin Warsh's hawkish comments on Friday, we have strikes in Iran, and oil is higher. It is the perfect cocktail for a risk-off day in a market that is trading near all-time highs," Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst at Baird in Louisville, Kentucky, told CNBC.

Even though there are concerns about inflation, US economic data have not changed enough to support an interest rate hike in September, Mayfield told CNBC. The probability of a US Fed rate hike in September stood at 68%, according to the CME FedWatch.

On Tuesday, the Nasdaq Composite was the worst-performing major US index, ending 1% lower. Shares of heavyweights Nvidia Corp., Microsoft Corp., and Alphabet Inc. closed around 1% lower, while Amazon shares fell nearly 2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 were down 0.7-0.8%.
