Equity Alert: US markets end lower as oil prices, Treasury yields rise
MUMBAI--0755 IST--Major US indices extended losses Tuesday as rising hostilities between the US and Iran pushed crude oil prices higher. Further, Treasury yields globally rose to multiyear highs as markets expect central banks worldwide to raise benchmark interest rates.
The US 10-year Treasury note moved to a 20-month-high, up 3 basis points to 4.788%, according to a CNBC report. The November futures contract of Brent crude oil was up more than 2%, rising to $96 per barrel after the US launched airstrikes against Iran on Tuesday and Iran responded by attacking US assets in Jordan, Bahrain, and Iraq, according to a Reuters report.
"Following Kevin Warsh's hawkish comments on Friday, we have strikes in Iran, and oil is higher. It is the perfect cocktail for a risk-off day in a market that is trading near all-time highs," Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst at Baird in Louisville, Kentucky, told CNBC.
Even though there are concerns about inflation, US economic data have not changed enough to support an interest rate hike in September, Mayfield told CNBC. The probability of a US Fed rate hike in September stood at 68%, according to the CME FedWatch.
On Tuesday, the Nasdaq Composite was the worst-performing major US index, ending 1% lower. Shares of heavyweights Nvidia Corp., Microsoft Corp., and Alphabet Inc. closed around 1% lower, while Amazon shares fell nearly 2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 were down 0.7-0.8%.
