MUMBAI – Benchmark indices ended slightly lower for the second consecutive session Tuesday as shares of banks and financial services companies fell. Rising crude oil prices, with Brent futures crossing $92 per barrel yet again due to the ongoing war in West Asia, continued to affect sentiment.

The Nifty 50 closed 0.1% lower at 24055.80, down 24.60 points. Post the continuous trading session, the benchmark index was 0.4% lower at 1515 IST. After a few minutes of the closing auction session, the indicative closing showed a positive end for the index before the final close. The BSE Sensex ended flat at 76944.28 points.

The Nifty 50 was dragged down by heavyweight constituent ICICI Bank, which fell 1.1%. Financial services companies including Shriram Finance, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv, State Bank of India, Jio Financial Services, and HDFC Life Insurance Co. ended 1-5% lower. InterGlobe Aviation, Nestle India, Max Healthcare Institute, Asian Paints, Grasim Industries, Apollo Hospitals Enterprises, and Larsen & Toubro closed 1-4% lower. Shares of IndiGo operator fell after multiple media reports said aviation turbine fuel prices for domestic airlines were hiked by INR 6.28 per litre to INR 121.28 per litre.

Maruti Suzuki India's stock extended losses intraday after the Swift-maker underperformed expectations for August sales. The stock closed over 4% lower. The carmaker reported a 21% on-year growth in vehicle despatches to 219,220 units. However, this was lower than 30-36% on-year growth estimated by four brokerages. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries ended nearly 3% lower after it announced a pact with the US government to extend "Most Favored Nation" pricing to US Medicaid programmes.

ITC shares ended over 4% higher after the merger announcement of Happiest Mind Technologies with its arm ITC Infotech. Post the merger, the combined entity aims $1 billion in revenues by the financial year 2027-28 (Apr-Mar). Meanwhile, shares of Happiest Minds Technologies closed over 10% lower. The proposed merger is likely to weigh on Happiest Minds Technologies' stock for the near term as the combined entity will be prone to issues being faced by ITC Infotech, according to analysts tracking the company. ITC Infotech operates in the IT-enabled services space with significant exposure to the retail, manufacturing, and travel sectors and some of these are facing a slowdown in growth. These sectors are sensitive to geopolitical problems, and they will account for over 50% of the combined entity's operations.

Bharti Airtel closed nearly 4% higher. The Nifty 50 heavyweight Reliance Industries closed nearly 3% higher. HCL Technologies, Oil and Natural Gas Corp., Bajaj Auto, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Hindustan Unilever, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Cipla closed 1-3% higher. Bajaj Auto ended in green after reporting a 28% on-year rise in August monthly sales. A senior Oil and Natural Gas Corp. executive said Monday the company is close to finalising its oil trading business and may start it by the end of FY27.

Adani group companies ended higher Tuesday after lodging a sharp fall Monday. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, Adani Green Energy Solutions, and Adani Power closed 3-4% higher. Adani Enterprises ended 0.2% higher.

All broader market indices ended in red. Small-cap indices ended 0.1-0.3% lower, while mid-cap indices closed over 1% lower. Among the sectoral indices, Nifty IT and Nifty FMCG ended around 1% higher each. "...renewed foreign capital outflows have kept investor sentiment cautious, with financial stocks facing the most pressure, while FMCG and IT sectors continue to attract defensive buying," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. On the other hand, Nifty Healthcare was the major laggard, down nearly 2%.

Shares of cable and wire makers ended lower, with KEI Industries, Polycab India, Havells India, and R R Kabel down 2-7%. This came after UltraTech Cement said it started commercial operations at its wires and cables plant, located at Bharuch, Gujarat, to manufacture house wires and light-duty cables. Paytm operator One 97 Communications fell nearly 5%. KEI Industries and Polycab India were the worst hit stocks in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices. Caplin Point Laboratories gained nearly 8% to be the top gainer in the Nifty 500.
