MUMBAI – The three-year term of Securities and Exchange Board of India's Whole-time Member Amarjeet Singh got over Monday since there was no government notification of an extension of his term. SEBI Tuesday removed Singh's name from the list of board members on its website. This leaves SEBI with three whole time members, one chairman, and four part time members currently.

The government appoints whole time members of SEBI. It decides on a case-to-case basis the tenure and other terms and conditions, and extension, if any, on term completion. The government's notifications in these matters are usually issued by the finance ministry in The Gazette of India.

Prior to his taking over as a whole time member on Sept. 1, 2023, Singh was an executive director in SEBI, and had risen up the ranks in SEBI over more than two decades. As of Monday, in his capacity as a whole time member, Singh was in charge of the investment management department, treasury and account, department of debt and hybrid securities, board cell, parliament questions cell, Right to Information Act cell, human resources department, office of international affairs, and regional and local offices of SEBI.

Another Whole-time Member Kamlesh Chandra Varshney will see his three-year term getting over on Sept. 19. Varshney had joined SEBI as its whole-time member on Sept. 20, 2023.

Prior to SEBI, Varshney was a joint secretary (tax policy and legislation) in the department of revenue of the government, and had a long experience of working in various capacities in the income tax department and finance ministry. As whole time member in SEBI, Varshney is currently in charge of the departments of prosecution and settlement, enforcement, corporation finance, integrated surveillance, corporation finance investigation, and legal affairs.

Apart from Varshney, the board of SEBI currently includes Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey, whole-time members K.V.R. Murty and Sandip Pradhan, and part-time members Deepti Gaur Mukerjee, Anuradha Thakur, Shirish Chandra Murmu, and N. Venkatram. Pradhan had taken charge as whole time member on Dec. 4, and Murty became the whole time member on Apr. 15.

Among the part time members, Mukerjee is secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Thakur is secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Finance. Murmu is deputy governor in the Reserve Bank of India.  End
