NEW DELHI – Wholesale sales by Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. grew in double-digits for the sixth consecutive month in August on a year-on-year basis, but reported a contraction on a monthly basis. Despatches of its utility vehicles were stronger than passenger cars, which also grew at a respectable pace. Maruti Suzuki sold 219,220 automobiles in August, up 21% on year but down 9% on month.

Maruti Suzuki sold 185,376 vehicles to dealerships in India last month, up almost 29% on year but down 12% on month. On the contrary, exports fell 7% on year but grew 13% on month to 33,844 units. 

Its domestic passenger vehicle despatches grew nearly 35% on year but fell 10% on month to 176,971 units. The company sold 85,965 passenger cars in August, up 29% on year but down 17% on month. Models in this segment include Alto, S-Presso, Baleno, Celerio, Ciaz, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR. Mini car sales improved 28% on year to 8,799 units while compact cars' sales grew a little over 29% to 77,166 units.

Despatches of its utility vehicles continued on a strong footing as the company sold 79,045 of these cars, up 46% on year and flat on month. Utility vehicles in Maruti Suzuki's stable include Brezza, Ertiga, e Vitara, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris, and XL6.

Sales to other car companies fell 48% on year and 53% on month to 5,298 units. These cars are later re-badged and sold under a different brand. The company sold 11,961 vans in August, up 11% on year, while despatches of its light commercial vehicles grew 12% to 3,107 units. 

In Apr-Aug, Maruti Suzuki sold 1.14 million cars, up 29% on year. This includes domestic sales of 954,729 units, up 32% on year, and exports of 188,636 units, up 14% on year.  

For the June quarter, Maruti Suzuki had reported a net profit of INR 33.52 billion on revenues of INR 524.56 billion. At 1244 IST, its shares traded 4.3% lower at INR 12,968 on the National Stock Exchange.   End
