NEW DELHI – India's goods and services tax collections maintained momentum and rose 14.8% in August to INR 1.999 trillion, government data released Tuesday showed. On a month-on-month basis, however, the collections moderated, falling 5.4% from INR 2.112 trillion collected in July.

Domestic GST revenue during August grew 9.3% on year to INR 1.372 trillion, the release said. Import revenue grew sharply last month, rising 29% on year to INR 626.04 billion. According to tax experts, it is worth looking into whether the rise in import revenue was due to finished goods or raw materials, and how much of it simply reflected a weaker rupee rather than higher volumes.

GST revenue, net of refunds, rose 8.3% on year to INR 1.681 trillion in August. This was despite the surge in refunds, which were up 67.9% on year to INR 317.95 billion.

Central GST collection in August was INR 384.13 billion, up from INR 340.76 billion a year ago. State GST collection last month was INR 463.16 billion, up from INR 428.54 billion collected in Augst 2025. Integrated GST mop-up was INR 1.151 trillion, up from INR 971.86 billion a year ago. The post-settlement revenue of states was INR 955.31 billion in August, up 13% on year.

As per the Budget estimates, the government's GST collections in 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) are projected to grow 6.3% on year. Collectively, in the first five months of FY27, GST collections grew 11% to INR 10.428 trillion.

"A strong 14.8% growth in overall GST collections has added to the cheer of 7.8% growth in GDP in Q1 (Apr-Jun)," Abhishek Jain, Partner and National Head, Indirect Tax - KPMG, said. "This collectively shows the robustness of the Indian economy despite geopolitical conflicts and global economic uncertainty."

Data released Monday showed that the Indian economy grew 7.8% in the June quarter, higher than analysts' estimate of 7.2% and the Reserve Bank of India's projection of 7.0%. The growth was led by manufacturing and services sector, reflecting the strong momentum in domestic activity.  End
