KOLKATA – State owned Coal India Ltd. Tuesday reported a 5.5% on-year growth in its dispatches to 60.6 million tonnes during August even though production fell primarily due to the incessant rains in key mining areas in east and central India.
The Maharatna company reported a 5.7% decline in production to 47.5 million tonnes during August. In the same month last year, Coal India's dispatches, or sales volume, were 57.4 million tonnes and production was 50.4 million tonnes.
In August, sales by Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd.--the largest Coal India subsidiary which is headed for listing on the bourses this financial year--grew 5% on year to 18.8 million tonnes. Coal sales from South Eastern Coalfields Ltd.--the second-largest subsidiary which is also headed for listing this financial year--increased 1.8% on year to 13.1 million tonnes.
However, heavy downpours disrupted mining operations in both these subsidiaries, resulting in a fall in production. Mahanadi Coalfields' output during August fell 10% on year to 14.2 million tonnes and production of South Eastern Coalfields fell 10.2% on year to 9.9 million tonnes.
Bharat Coking Coal Ltd.--another Coal India subsidiary--registered a 1.4% on year fall in sales to 2.7 million tonnes while production was flat on year at 2.2 million tonnes.
Eastern Coalfields Ltd., which possesses some of the best quality coal in the country and also has a wide range of underground mines, registered a strong performance. Sales of this subsidiary grew 45.3% on year to 4.5 million tonnes in August and production increased 39.5% on year to 3.7 million tonnes.
Northern Coalfields Ltd., which is Coal India's third-largest subsidiary, posted muted production and sales performance in August. Sales fell 23.7% on year to 8.8 million tonnes and production declined 24.8% on year to 8.5. million tonnes.
During Apr-Aug, Coal India's cumulative sales grew 6.7% on year to 322.9 million tonnes, namely led by the two largest subsidiaries mentioned before, along with strong performance from Eastern Coalfields and Central Coalfields Ltd.
While South Eastern Coalfields maintained the production momentum in Apr-Aug, which was augmented by higher production from Eastern Coalfields and Central Coalfields, dismal show by Mahanadi Coalfields, Northern Coalfields, and Bharat Coking Coal led Coal India's cumulative production to drop 4.5% on year in Apr-Aug.
At 1203 IST, shares of Coal India traded marginally down at INR 401.25 on the National Stock Exchange. End
