MUMBAI – The government has reduced the base import price of gold and raised for silver, according to a notification from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs Monday. The base import price of gold was lowered by $32 per 10 grams to $1,468 per 10 grams. For silver, it was raised by $170 to $2,267 per kg. The revised rates have come into effect Tuesday.
The customs department had previously revised the base import price for both the precious metals on Aug. 26. Typically, the government revises base import prices of gold and silver every fortnight, but makes more frequent changes when prices are volatile. India is one of the world's largest importers of silver and the second-largest consumer of gold. End
