HYDERABAD – Rating agencies need wider lenses to evaluate the infrastructure ecosystem rather than looking at one standard template, Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani group, said Monday. Speaking at a conference hosted by rating agency CareEdge, Adani said the projects approved today are capable of changing the entire economy with a multiplier effect in future.

"We do not need lower standards, but we need wider lenses. I am not asking you to compromise your independence or say yes to unviable ambition. I am asking you to use your independence to build dynamic models that recognise the compounding power of national platforms," he said.

Referring to Adani Green Energy Ltd.'s 30-gigawatt hybrid solar and wind energy project in Khavda and its port, power, and petrochemical projects in Mundra, and the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, Adani said these are not just sector-specific projects. They create entirely new capabilities, combine multiple infrastructure layers, and reshape economics around them, he said.

"They create new ecosystems. They create new capabilities. They change the economics around them. And therefore, they require an analytical framework capable of measuring not just stand-alone cash flows, but also ecosystem multiplier, strategic resilience and adjacencies value," he said.

The billionaire tycoon said the decisions made by people in rating agencies will influence which infrastructure platforms receive capital, which ideas are able to scale, and which national capabilities India is able to build for itself. "Today, I would like to place a challenge before the CareEdge team. Why should the world's first truly comprehensive credit framework for integrated platform infrastructures not come from India? Why should CareEdge not lead it? Develop a framework capable of evaluating multidimensional infrastructures, a framework that recognises ecosystem multipliers, a framework that recognises adjacencies values," he said. One day, emerging economists around the world may use the new framework developed in India as their benchmark, he said.

Adani said his three decades of experience in building infrastructure had shown him that the true value of infrastructure could not be measured only through financial statements but also through the lives it transformed. He said infrastructure should serve as a foundation for the country's future rather than merely as a monument to those who built it.

He said every national capability began with an idea that required confidence and support, making a credit rating more than just a letter or number, as it represented a judgment of trust. He said the decisions taken by rating institutions would influence which ideas received confidence, which platforms attracted capital, and which capabilities India could build. He said rating institutions had a responsibility to protect trust, strengthen discipline, and continuously evolve to support India's ambitions. He said India's development by 2047 would depend on ambition, earning trust, trust unlocking capital, and capital helping build national capabilities.

Adani said India would become developed and capable when self-confidence became its new identity and the country's capabilities and resolve strengthened its standing globally. He said building such an India was a collective responsibility.
