India Monday rainfall 11% below normal; season-to-date deficit at 14%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 6.1 millimetres of rainfall Monday, 11?low the normal of 6.8 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 31, the country received 603.7 millimetres of rain, 14?low the normal of 700.7 millimetres for the period. 

 

Of the country's four homogeneous regions, northwest India and central India registered "normal" rains Monday. East and northeast India received "excess" rains but south India registered "large deficient" rains. East and northeast India received 56?ove-normal rainfall at 13.7 millimetres and south India recorded 77?low-normal rainfall at 1.3 millimetres. Meanwhile, central India received 17?low-normal rains at 7.2 millimetres and northwest India recorded 3.9 millimetres of rainfall, 14?low normal.

 

Monday, Odisha received the highest rainfall at 25.0 millimetres, followed by Jharkhand at 21.9 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. The bureau has issued a red alert for Chhattisgarh amid forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall till Tuesday.

 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 17, "large excess" in seven, "normal" in five, "deficient" in three, and "excess" in two. There was no rainfall in two subdivisions, according to the data.  End
