NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for "extremely heavy" rainfall over Odisha on Monday and Chhattisgarh till Tuesday. Meanwhile, parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and east Uttar Pradesh are expected to receive "very heavy" rains till Tuesday. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, and others are also expected to receive "very heavy" rains till Tuesday. Barring Bihar, the weather bureau has issued low-to-moderate flash flood risks for many districts in these states for the next 24 hours.

These rainfall conditions are under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal, adjoining areas of north coastal Odisha and northwest Bay of Bengal. The department said an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Assam and neighbourhood areas in the lower tropospheric level, causing heavy rainfall over the region.

In central India, along with Chhattisgarh, many parts of Madhya Pradesh are also expected to receive "very heavy" rainfall till Saturday. In east India, "heavy" rainfall is expected over parts of West Bengal till Friday and Bihar from Tuesday to Friday.

In northwest India, "very heavy" rainfall is forecast over east Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand till Tuesday. Meanwhile, "heavy" rainfall is expected over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab from Wednesday to Saturday. For Delhi, the department has forecast light rains over many places with moderate rains over a few places for the next three days.

The weather bureau does not expect heavy rainfall over west India, comprising Gujarat and Maharashtra, as well as south India till Sunday. The department has only forecast subdued rains over these regions in the coming days. However, it said gusty winds are likely over coastal and interior Karnataka as well as Telangana till Tuesday.  End
