NEW DELHI – Punjab National Bank will position itself as a leader in artificial intelligence adoption in India's financial sector, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ashok Chandra said. The public-sector lender has trained all its officers in the emerging technology and plans to systematically provide all employees with a basic understanding of AI.

 

Chandra was speaking at the bank's AI Summit 2026, where he flagged the need to use the technology responsibly due to the unintended consequences its use can have. He considered it the bank's responsibility to build awareness in the sector, with the state-owned lender working over the past few years to roll out consumer-facing applications using AI. Chandra reiterated that quantum and agentic AI use may be the next frontier for adoption in the financial sector in the next 2-3 years.

 

Speaking at the event, Indian Banks' Association Chief Executive Atul Kumar Goel said the industry body had given banks a framework and over 150 recommendations to deal with vulnerabilities associated with AI. The government had given the bank association the responsibility of identifying vulnerabilties in India's financial artichecture, especially from new models like Anthropic Claude's Mythos.  End
