MUMBAI – India recorded 5.2 millimetres of rains Sunday, 26% below the normal of 7.1 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 30, the country received 597.6 millimetres of rain, 14% below the normal of 693.9 millimetres for the period.

Of the country's four homogeneous regions, east and northeast India, and northwest India registered "normal" rains Sunday. While central India received "deficient" rains, and south India registered "large deficient" rains Sunday.

The east and northeast region received 7% below normal rainfall at 8.6 millimetres and south India recorded 66% below normal rainfall at 1.8 millimetres. Meanwhile, central India received 26% below normal rains at 7.3 millimetres and northwest India recorded 3.4 millimetres of rainfall, 17% below normal. 

Sunday, Jharkhand received the highest rainfall at 19.4 millimetres, followed by Chattisgarh at 17.3 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. 

Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 16, "deficient" in eight, "large excess" in five, "normal" in three and "excess" in two. There was no rain in two sub-divisions, according to the data.  End
