India Sat rainfall 37% below normal; season-to-date deficit at 14%, says IMD

NEW DELHI – India Saturday recorded 4.6 millimetres of rainfall, 37% below the normal of 7.3 millimetres, data from the India Metereological Department showed. In the period between Jun. 1 and Aug. 29, India received 592.4 millimetres of precipitation, 14% below the season's normal of 686.8 millimetres.
Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, the northwest region and the east and northeast region received normal levels of rainfall. Northwest India received 3.7 millimetres of precipiitation against a normal of 4.3 millimetres. East and northeast India received 9.3 millimetres of rainfall against a normal of 9.1 millimetres. However, two subdivisions in northwest India -- east and west Rajasthan -- received no rainfall while Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh received 139% above-normal rains.
Central India saw deficit rainfall, recording 4.9 millimetres of rainfall, 53% lower than the normal of 10.3 millimetres. Saurashtra and Kutch received no rainfall. The southern peninsular region received 1.8 millimetres of rainfall, recording a deficit of 66% against a normal of 5.1 millimetres. Lakshadweep received no rainfall and the Rayalaseema area received 98% below-normal rain.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, 12 registered "large deficient" and another 12 registered "deficient" rains. Two subdivisions registered "large excess" rainfall and four got "excess" rain. Two subdivisions registered "normal" precipitation. Four subdivisions received no rain. End
