NEW DELHI – India and Argentina have agreed to increase cooperation in several key sectors, including the critical mineral lithium, energy, and emerging technologies, the commerce ministry said in a release. India's pharmaceutical and agricultural products may also get improved access to the South American nation, with progress made in talks between officials.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal headed a delegation to Buenos Aires for the fourth meeting of the India-Argentina joint trade committee Monday. Bilateral trade between the countries topped $6.5 billion in 2025 and India is Argentina's fifth-largest trading partner, as per the release. Argentina is working to facilitate trade, reduce non-tariff barriers, and promote investment that is expected to increase the participation of Indian companies in the country, according to the commerce ministry.
Technical-level discussions on sanitary and phytosanitary measures for agricultural products may herald market access in Argentina for Indian onions, milk and milk products, grapes, potatoes, bananas, and pulses. Argentina has also committed to work to upgrade India to Annex I from Annex II under its pharmaceutical regulatory framework, reducing barriers to entry for India's pharmaceutical companies into the market, the ministry said.
Further opportunities for Khanij Bidesh India Ltd., a company set up under the government's critical minerals mission, were explored after progress on its first site. Other opportunities across energy and infrastructure were also discussed, as per the release.
"Emerging areas of cooperation, including aviation, space technology, telecommunications and digital services, were identified as areas offering further opportunities for both countries, particularly in 5G (fifth generation telecommunications), artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure," the ministry said.
