NEW DELHI – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urged business leaders in Chicago, the US, to invest in India, highlighting broad-based growth, pace of reforms, and expanding opportunities for long-term investments. The policy environment encourages investment, manufacture, innovation, and expansion, the Ministry of Finance said on its official X, formerly Twitter, account.

The finance minister pitched investment opportunities in the manufacturing sector, infrastructure, defence and advanced technologies, food processing, artificial intelligence, and digital avenues as well as in financial services. She was on an official visit to Canada since Tuesday before arriving in the US ahead of the Group of 20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors' two-day meeting starting Monday.

"The Union Finance Minister outlined... a combination of strong domestic demand, investment-led growth, macroeconomic resilience, a deep talent pool and rapidly expanding digital and physical infrastructure," the finance ministry said. "As global companies reassess supply chains and capital allocation, India offers not only scale as a market, but increasing depth as a long-term investment and operating platform."

Sitharaman noted opportunities in building higher-value businesses in AI as India's global capability centres become global innovation hubs. She also invited global institutions to explore the offering of India's International Financial Services Centre at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City. The finance minister focused on manufacturing for those local and export needs, helped by targeted policy measures such as production-linked incentives, the ministry said in its post.

She also highlighted the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund as a platform for global investment into India's infrastructure build-out. Public capital expenditure has risen sharply and the Centre plans to spend INR 12.22 trillion for this purpose in the financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Mar). On the food processing front, Sitharaman noted the changes in India's large agriculture base and the opportunities in packaging, logistics, and storage, according to the social media post.

"While concluding her remarks, the Union Finance Minister invited global partners to co-develop, co-produce, and build for global markets, and to not merely consider India as a market to serve, but as a platform from which to build for the world..." the ministry said.  End
