India Fri rainfall 36% below normal; season-to-date deficit at 13%, says IMD

MUMBAI – Friday, India recorded 4.7 millimetres of rainfall, 36?low the normal of 7.4 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. Between Jun. 1 and Aug. 28, the country received 587.8 millimetres of precipitation, which is 13?low the season's normal of 679.5 millimetres.
Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, the east and northeast recorded normal rainfall while the other three recorded below-normal showers, the report showed. The south peninsula registered "large deficient" rainfall while the central and northwest regions registered "deficient" rains.
The east and northeast region received 9.2 millimetres of precipitation, 4?low its normal of 9.6 millimetres. Of the seven subdivisions of the region, three registered "deficient" or "large deficient" rains, two received "normal" rainfall, while one received "excess" rainfall. The Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura meteorological subdivision received "large excess" showers at 16.4 millimetres, which is 76?ove its normal.
The northwest region of the country received 4.1 millimetres of rain, which is 29?low the normal of 5.8 millimetres. Central India received 5.1 millimetres of rain, 45?low its normal of 9.4 millimetres, and the south peninsula received 1.3 millimetres of precipitation, 74?low its normal of 5.1 millimetres.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, 17 registered "large deficient" rainfall, eight received "deficient" rains, while five registered "normal" showers. Three subdivisions received "large excess" rainfall, one received "excess" rain, and two subdivisions--Saurashtra and Kutch, and West Rajasthan--received no rainfall, according to the weather bureau.
