MUMBAI – Benchmark indices closed higher Friday, with information technology stocks and a slight recovery in HDFC Bank supporting the market. The IT stocks rose, tracking their US peers, following bullish commentary from Salesforce.

The Nifty 50 ended 0.4% higher at 24175.65 points – more than 30 points above the level at which the continuous trading session ended at 1515 IST. Sensex ended at 77264.51, up 330.92 points or 0.4% from Thursday.

Analysts said that investors still need clarity on crude oil price movements and the geopolitical situation in West Asia. The uncertainty around the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remains an overhang for equity markets. "Investors are awaiting further clarity on geopolitical developments, while key global and domestic macro triggers are likely to guide market direction," Siddhartha Khemka, head of research of wealth management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, said in a note. October Brent crude oil futures were around $90 per barrel, about 24?ove the pre-war level.

Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Wipro, and HCL Technologies closed 3-4% higher. Technology stocks in the US rose overnight after Nvidia's stronger-than-expected revenue forecast and upbeat commentary from Salesforce. Despite concerns over AI-driven revenue deflation, some IT sector analysts believe Indian companies will ultimately benefit from increased AI adoption. Nifty IT closed nearly 4% higher. The sectoral index rose after falling for two consecutive sessions.

Meanwhile, banking heavyweight ICICI Bank closed over 1% lower, limiting gains in the Nifty 50. Shriram Finance and SBI Life Insurance Co. each ended around 1% lower. ITC, UltraTech Cement, and Asian Paints closed about 1% lower. Asian Paints shares fell amid a rise in crude oil prices, a key raw material for paint.

Broader market indices ended mixed. The Nifty Smallcap 50 ended almost flat, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 and the Nifty Smallcap 250 closed 0.2-0.3% higher. Nifty Midcap 150 and Nifty Midcap 100 closed flat, while the Nifty Midcap 50 closed 0.2% higher. Nifty India Defence ended 0.5% lower, making it the biggest laggard among sectoral indices. More than half of the index constituents ended in the red. Nuvama Institutional Equities remained positive on the defence sector, citing a robust order pipeline.

Among Nifty 200 stocks, IT players Coforge and LTM closed nearly 6% and 5% higher, respectively. On Friday, Coforge announced expansion of its partnership with US-based Pegasystems Inc. for enterprise AI transformation. On the other hand, defence stock Bharat Dynamics closed over 3% lower. Billonbrains Garage Ventures, Jubilant Foodworks, and TVS Motor Co. closed nearly 3% lower each. TVS Motor Co. shares fell after its CEO K N Radhakrishnan stepped down with effect from January. He had served as the automobile major's CEO since October 2018.

NMDC Steel ended nearly 9% higher, making it the top gainer among Nifty 500 constituents. Newgen Software Technologies, Ather Energy, and Tejas Networks closed around 8% higher each. Ather Energy ended higher after Hero MotoCorp bought an additional stake in the electric two-wheeler maker for INR 17.58 billion. Tejas Networks gained sharply after the company received a letter of intent for a INR 15.4 billion order from Tata Consultancy Services. Devyani International closed down over 4%.
