288 Indians uncontactable during Nepal floods, rescue ops underway, says MEA

NEW DELHI – As many as 288 Indian nationals remain uncontactable following the flash floods in Nepal, with 73 of them working on the Trishuli-1 power project, said Randhir Jaiswal, external affairs ministry spokesperson, at a briefing in New Delhi Thursday. "Our Embassy in Kathmandu is in touch with the project head to get more details about these people," Jaiswal said. "Communication lines in that area are totally disrupted, and, therefore, it has been difficult to get in touch with people on the ground."
Jaiswal said 21 Indian nationals, all from Tamil Nadu, have been rescued from the flood-affected areas while around 200 Indians who had gone on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra are stranded on the Chinese side of the border. He said the Indian mission is coordinating with the local authorities for their rescue and evacuation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Nepalese counterpart Balendra Shah Wednesday, conveyed condolences and offered all possible assistance, Jaiswal said. The ministry has set up a control room to coordinate assistance for those affected by the floods, he added. End
