MUMBAI – Benchmark indices ended lower for the second consecutive session despite a fall in crude oil prices for the fourth consecutive session. Analysts said current crude oil prices remain a concern for the market. A more than 2?ll in HDFC Bank shares weighed on the Nifty 50. Barring Nifty Smallcap 50, all the other broader market indices ended lower. Thursday, the Nifty 50 closed 0.5% lower at 24090.85, while the Sensex ended 0.7% lower at 76933.59.
"Expiry-led volatility and the lack of a diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East continue to keep markets range-bound in the near term," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. Crude oil prices extended their fall for the fourth consecutive session but failed to provide any relief to the equity markets. At 1523 IST, October Brent crude futures were flat at $87.87 per barrel. Over the last four sessions, crude oil prices shed nearly 7%. However, crude oil is still nearly 21% higher than pre-war levels.
HDFC Bank shares fell over 2% to a more than two-year low of INR 710 Thursday. The sharp fall came after news reports that the bank is facing a class-action lawsuit in the US following a complaint by investor Jwalant Natvarlal Soneji. Soneji filed a class-action securities fraud complaint against the bank and two senior executives in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York on Aug. 13 on behalf of investors who purchased HDFC Bank securities between Jul. 17, 2023, and May 26, 2026, according to a Mint report. He alleged that the bank violated US securities laws through misleading disclosures and governance lapses.
Power transmission and grid companies' shares traded higher Thusrday after the US administration banned the use of some foreign-made equipment in the country's electric grid. The move aims to curb Chinese companies' participation in the US power sector, which could give Indian companies an advantage, an analyst tracking the sector said. CG Power and Industrial Solutions, Hitachi Energy India, and GE Vernova T&D India ended 2-3% higher.
Barring Nifty Smallcap 50, which ended 0.1% higher, all the other broader market indices ended lower. Nifty Smallcap 250 and Nifty Smallcap 100 closed 0.1% lower each. The midcap indices were also down 0.1?ch. The broader market indices opened higher Thursday but slipped into the red later. Midcap indices ended lower after hitting historical highs Wednesday.
Adani Enterprises ended nearly 2% higher. Domestic brokerage Motilal Oswal initiated coverage on the stock with a 'buy' recommendation and a target price of INR 3,880, which is over 22% higher than Thursday's close. The Adani-group company is expected to emerge as a leading global infrastructure platform and is seen to benefit from its superior scale, diversified growth portfolio, and incubator model, Motilal Oswal said. Kotak Mahindra Bank, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, Cipla, Bharat Electronics, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, and Tech Mahindra closed 1-2% higher. ICICI Bank shares ended the day with nearly 1% gains.
Hindalco Industries closed nearly 3% lower, making it the major laggard in the Nifty 50. Mahindra & Mahindra, Shriram Finance, Grasim Industries, HCL Technologies, Bharti Airtel, Jio Financial Services, and InterGlobe Aviation closed 1-2% lower. Another heavyweight, Reliance Industries, ended over 1% lower.
ICICI Prudential Asset Management ended nearly 4% lower after nearly 10 million shares exchanged hands on the BSE at INR 3,065 per share, a nearly 5% discount to the previous close. Gold loan financiers Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance closed nearly 4% and 5% lower, respectively. Bombay Burmah Trading Corp. ended over 13% higher to be the top gainer among the Nifty 500 constituents. The stock gained after the company informed the exchanges that the Supreme Court had recalled a lease-rent demand of INR 46.55 billion from the corporation. This demand was linked to ongoing proceedings concerning the corporation's erstwhile tea estate in Singampatti, Tamil Nadu.
