MUMBAI – Benchmark indices are expected to open lower Thursday despite the fall in crude oil prices. Investors will focus on the comments from the US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium. Information technology shares will be the centre of attraction after artificial intelligence behemoth Nvidia reported higher-than-expected earnings and gave guidance that exceeded expectations as well.

At 0740 IST, the October futures of Brent crude oil were 1% lower at $87.33. The crude oil extended losses for the fourth consecutive session due to the recent talks between Iran and Oman to manage the movement of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. This sparked renewed hope that the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz may be reopened, pulling oil prices lower. Crude oil prices are not expected to rise from higher levels, but at the same time, they are not expected to fall due to some supply disruptions, an analyst with a domestic brokerage said. "If crude falls below $85 then that could be a big positive for the market," he added.

Overnight, the American Depository Receipts of Indian IT majors Infosys and Wipro were down nearly 3% post the results' announcement of tech-giant Nvidia. The AI major's revenue for the June quarter more than doubled on year and rose 18% sequentially to $96.2 billion. The company's generally accepted accounting principles gross margin was at 75%, while the generally accepted accounting principles earnings per diluted share were $2.46. "AI has reached its inflection point. It's doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue," said Jensen Huang, founder and chief executive officer of NVIDIA said in a press release. The AI company guided for a revenue of $108 billion, and generally accepted accounting principles gross margins at 74%. The data centre revenue for the quarter was at $89 billion, up 18% sequentially, and 117% on year.

The heavyweight stock HDFC Bank's American Depository Receipts fell nearly 2% after a news report said that the private sector lender is facing a lawsuit in the US, with an investor alleging that the bank violated American securities law and caused losses to shareholders.

At 0803 IST, the September futures of GIFT Nifty traded flat at 24363, indicating a fall for the Nifty 50. The short-term support for the Nifty 50 is placed at 24000-23800, according to Bajaj Broking Research. "Overall index is expected to extend the recent consolidation and trade in the broad range of 24000-24700 in the coming sessions" the brokerage said in a note. The resistance for the index is seen at 24300.

On the global front, the Asian markets were mixed, with the tech-heavy Kospi rising the most in the region. The South Korean index rose nearly 2%. The index gained positive sentiment from the robust June quarter earnings of Nvidia. Japan's Nikkei 225 opened higher and later slipped into red, down 0.1%. The US indices ended lower.  End
