India Wed rainfall 21% below normal; season-to-date deficit at 13%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 5.5 millimetres of rain Wednesday, 21?low the normal of 6.9 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 26, the country received 577.8 millimetres of rain, 13?low the normal of 664.7 millimetres for the period.
Of the country's four homogeneous regions, east and northeast India, central India, and south India received "deficient" rains Wednesday. Northwest India registered "excess" rains.
The east and northeast region received 43?low-normal rainfall at 5.8 millimetres and central India recorded 5.5 millimetres of rainfall, 27% below normal. South India received 41% below-normal rains at 3.4 millimetres. Northwest India recorded 6.5 millimetres of rainfall, 23?ove normal.
Wednesday, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Mahe received the highest rainfall of around 20 millimetres each, followed by west Uttar Pradesh at 18.3 millimetres, according to data from the weather bureau.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 15, "deficient" in nine, "large excess" in six, "normal" in five, and "excess" in one, according to the data. End
