MUMBAI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. Wednesday said it became the first passenger vehicle company to transport its cars by rail to the Pollachi Railway Terminal in Tamil Nadu. The company expects the new terminal to support delivery of over 11,000 additional vehicles annually through railways to the region, it said in a press release.

 

The first rake carried 120 vehicles, including models such as Wagon R, Ertiga, Dzire, and Celerio. The rake was flagged off from its in-plant railway siding in Manesar, Haryana, on Aug. 18. The company intends to move the cars from Pollachi to Coimbatore, where it will ship them to showrooms across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, according to the Times of India newspaper.

 

Maruti Suzuki first began rail-based vehicle despatches in 2014-15 (Apr-Mar). The share of rail in its outbound vehicle despatches jumped to 26.5% in FY26 from 5% in FY15. The company targets increasing this to 35% by FY31. Maruti Suzuki has despatched over 3.2 million vehicles by rail since FY15.

For the June quarter, Maruti Suzuki reported a net profit of INR 33.52 billion on revenues of INR 524.56 billion. Wednesday, the company's shares ended 1.2% lower at INR 13,520 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
