NEW DELHI – The government has raised the base import price of gold but has left it unchanged for silver, according to a notification from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs late Tuesday. The base import price of gold was increased by $93 per 10 grams to $1,500 per 10 grams. For silver, it is kept unchanged at $2,097 per kg. The revised rates came into effect Wednesday.
The customs department had previously revised the base import price for both the precious metals on Aug. 14. Typically, the government revises base import prices of gold and silver every fortnight, but makes more frequent changes when prices are volatile. India is one of the world's largest importers of silver and the second-largest consumer of gold.
The government has also kept the base import price of most edible oils unchanged from the previous notification. End
