Narcotics Bureau, pharma export body sign MoU to ease export procedures

NEW DELHI – The Central Bureau of Narcotics and the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India signed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate legitimate pharmaceutical exports, strengthen regulatory oversight, and prevent diversion of pharma products.
The memorandum of understanding aims to streamline export procedures for compliant pharmaceutical exporters and reduce time taken for export authorisations, while safeguarding against misuse of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and controlled precursors, an official press release said.
Under the agreement, the government, in consultation with the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India, will develop a voluntary and non-binding code of conduct for the pharma industry. The code will recommend industry practices without creating additional statutory or financial burdens on exporters beyond applicable laws.
The two sides will also identify operational bottlenecks and recommend measures to improve the ease of doing business for legitimate pharma exporters. "The MoU establishes a framework for the exchange of necessary information to achieve regulatory objectives, subject to applicable laws and confidentiality obligations. Furthermore, the pharma industry will endeavour to nominate 'Contact Persons' from member companies to coordinate matters associated with the VCC (Voluntary Code of Conduct)," the release said. End
