MUMBAI – The benchmark indices ended higher Tuesday after being in the red for most part of the day. A sharp fall in crude oil prices led to the last-minute short-covering in the equity market. The October futures contract of Brent crude oil fell sharply to below $90 per barrel after seven sessions.

At 1503 IST, the Brent crude futures contract was down nearly 3% at $89.66. After the closing auction session, the Nifty 50 ended at 24334.55 points, up 115.50 points or 0.5%. The BSE Sensex closed at 77656.09, up 286.98 points or 0.4%. Crude oil prices fell as investors see lower supply risks from US economic sanctions on Iran as compared to military action in West Asia, according to a Dow Jones report.

Shares of IndiGo operator InterGlobe Aviation reversed a minor fall and gained intraday. The sharp fall in crude oil price led to a recovery in the stock, as lower oil prices will aid the airline's margins.

Adani Enterprises closed nearly 4% higher and became the top gainer in the 50-stock index. Max Healthcare Institute and Apollo Hospital Enterprises ended around 2% higher each. On the other hand, HDFC Life Insurance Co., Cipla, and Oil and Natural Gas Corp. were the worst-hit stocks in the index, down around 1?ch.

The broader market indices ended mixed. The Nifty Midcap indices ended 0.4-0.5% higher while the Nifty Smallcap indices ended 0.1% lower. Though Indian headline indices have been consolidating, much of the action is in the mid- and small-cap space, Kranthi Bathini, equity strategist at WealthMills Securities Pvt. Ltd., said. The broader market indices look strong and resilient, Bathini said, adding, "The liquidity has been flowing into these spaces."

On the sectoral front, Nifty Healthcare was the best performer, up over 1%. Bathini is of the view that healthcare stocks could offer a good opportunity for investors after some correction in stock prices.

On the global front, most Asian indices ended higher, with South Korea's Kospi being the top performer in the region, up 0.7%. The Hang Seng Index and CSI 300 Index ended marginally lower. Most Asian markets had opened lower Tuesday but closed higher.

Vodafone Idea closed nearly 8% higher to be the best performer among the Nifty 200 constituents. The stock gained positive momentum after media reports that State Bank of India has agreed to sanction a loan for its capital expenditure plans. The latest development comes after Vodafone Idea's promoters agreed to provide guarantees, according to media reports citing people familiar with the matter. Shares of Indus Towers were up 3.5%.

Federal Bank's shares were the major laggard in the Nifty 200. The stock fell 3?ter CNBC-TV18 reported the bank is looking to acquire controlling stake in Jana Small Finance Bank. Later in the day, the bank did not deny the news but clarified it has no pending disclosure regarding the matter. Shares of Jana Small Finance Bank ended nearly 2% lower.

Shares of oil explorer Oil India fell intraday due to a sharp fall in global crude oil prices. At the same time, oil marketing companies Hindustan Petroleum Corp., Bharat Petroleum Corp., and Indian Oil Corp. ended 0.3-2.0% higher.

Fertiliser stocks ended higher after Russia assured India of uninterrupted fertiliser supplies. Russia's President Vladimir Putin told External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar that Moscow is prioritising energy, fertiliser, nuclear, and high technology sectors in the bilateral cooperation with India, as per media reports. This comes at a time when India is facing fertiliser supply issues due to the war in West Asia.

Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore closed nearly 12% higher. Its peers, Paradeep Phosphates, AWL Agri Business, National Fertilizers, and Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers, closed 2-5% higher. Hindustan Copper ended over 7% lower after the government decided to sell 6% stake in the company at an issue price of INR 514 per share, a 10% discount to Monday's closing price.
