AHMEDABAD - Tata Steel Ltd. Tuesday said the Revisional Authority of the Ministry of Coal has admitted its revision application challenging a demand of INR 17.55 billion by the District Mining Office, Ramgarh, Jharkhand, over alleged excess extraction of coal from its West Bokaro Colliery. The demand notice dated Mar. 30 was received on Apr. 3, alleging excess extraction of around 16.24 million tonnes of coal beyond permissible limits between financial year 2000-01 (Apr-Mar) and FY07. The demand was raised on grounds similar to those considered by the Supreme Court in the Common Cause vs Union of India case, according to an exchange filing.
Tata Steel had claimed the demand lacked justification and substantive basis and had merit to be challenged. Accordingly, it filed a revision application before the Revisional Authority on Monday, challenging the demand notice. The Revisional Authority heard the matter on Thursday and Tata Steel received a copy of the order on Monday.
The authority has admitted the company's revision application for consideration and directed the respondents Jharkhand government and the District Mining Officer not to take any coercive steps against Tata Steel.
For the quarter ended June, Tata Steel had reported consolidated net profit of INR 23.18 billion on revenues of INR 607.94 billion. At 1057 IST, the company's shares traded at INR 184.30 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, down 1% from Monday. End
