NEW DELHI: Cockroach Janta Party Monday said it will hold a youth march from India Gate to the Delhi Police headquarters here on Sept. 5, led by families of deceased students who had appeared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test and victims of police brutality after the government failed to withdraw all first information reports against the protesters. "With the government continuing to delay and avoid fulfilling its assurances, the CJP National Working Committee has decided to resume peaceful mobilisation," it said.

 

The group condemned the Centre for failing to honour commitments made to India's youth on Jul. 25, particularly on the withdrawal of first information reports against students and protesters. "The government must honour its word. Our patience must not be mistaken for weakness," it said.

 

On Jul. 20, thousands of students led by Cockroach Janta Party, which started out as a satirical social media page, had marched towards Parliament demanding the resignation of then education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged medical entrance paper leak. The police used tear gas and batons against protesters, injuring nearly 150 people, according to media reports. Thereafter, Pradhan resigned Jul. 25. The group then called off its protest after the government promised to meet all of its demands.

 

Last week, the Supreme Court set up a panel headed by retired apex court judge R. Subhash Reddy to probe the violence during the protests in Delhi and other states. The top court said it was considering quashing all FIRs against students who were protesting peacefully. "The states can give us a list of FIRs where only students are involved," the bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant had said. "The law is well settled regarding the power of this court, and we can exercise that power." The cases of persons who were previously involved in serious offences such as rape, murder, and kidnapping can be considered separately, he added.  End
