MUMBAI – Benchmark indices fell slightly Monday as tensions between the US and Iran didn't show signs of easing with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent likely to announce new economic sanctions on Iran. High crude oil prices have increased the risk of inflation affecting demand and earnings growth of companies going forward, analysts said.
"US-Iran is mainly the reason keeping markets down right now," Dharmesh Kant, head of equity research at Cholamandalam Securities, said. "Domestic inflows are coming but there are no meaningful flows from FIIs (foreign institutional investors)."
Monday, the Nifty 50 closed at 24219.05, down nearly 33 points or 0.1% from Friday. This is turning out to be the third straight week of decline for the index with the index falling 1.4% during this losing streak. Sensex also saw similar fall and it was down at 77369.11 points.
Indian markets also fell in line with its Asian counterparts on risk-off sentiment ahead of Nvidia's earnings on Wednesday and the US Federal Reserve's annual gathering at Jackson Hole later this week. Indices in China, Hong Kong, South Korea were down 1-3% amid fall in aritificial intelligence related stocks.
In India, broader market indices were mixed with the smallcap 250 index down 0.2% and the midcap 150 index were better off with minor gains. Kant said the interest of investors has shifted to smallcaps and midcaps recently with investors looking for multibaggers as benchmark indices haven't given significant returns for some time. This shift away from largecaps is clear from the fact that the midcap and smallcap indices were at lifetime highs just a week ago while the Nifty 50 index had last hit lifetime high in January and was still down over 8% from that level.
High crude oil prices remained the biggest risk for Indian companies, analysts said. Brent crude oil futures were down nearly 2% to around $93 per barrel, but it was up over 27% from pre-war level. The risk of margins due to high oil prices has prevented markets to move higher despite companies posting better-than-expected results during the June quarter. The Nifty 50 is largely flat compared with the levels just before companies started reporting June quarter results.
Among largecaps, metal companies were the top gainers Monday, rising 1-2?ch, as US-Iran war may keep commodity prices high. At the same time, some of the financial stocks were worst hit with SBI Life Insurance Co. down nearly 2%.
Information technology companies' stocks came off highs sharply as concerns remain of hit to revenue of Indian IT companies due to artificial intelligence. "It doesn't seem interest towards AI chips stocks is coming down soon," Kant said based on his interaction with some foreign investors in Australia. The Nifty IT index ended unchanged from Friday as against a gain of over 1% in the morning.
Shares of gold jewellery makers were up with Senco Gold and PC Jeweller up 8-9%. Shares of Muthoot Finance, major gold financier, were up nearly 6%. Higher gold prices have lifted these stocks recently with October contracts of gold futures on the Multi Commodity Exchange up over 15% in August so far.
Among stocks, Vishal Mega Mart gained nearly 10?ter the company reappointed Gunender Kapur as managing director and chief executive officer for five years. Urban Co. rose over 6?ter Emkay Global Financial Services started coverage with a 'buy' rating and a target price of INR 190, which is still 12.5?ove Monday's close. The stock has gained over 30% in a month.
Among losers, BLS International fell nearly 11% to INR 241.51, erasing almost all of the gains made in August, after reports of Spanish National Court probing alleged links of the company to a visa fraud network. The company denied involvement in any fraud but the clarification did little for the stock.
