India Mon rainfall 16% above normal; season-to-date deficit at 13%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 8.9 millimetres of rainfall Monday, 16% above the normal of 7.7 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 24, the country received 564.2 millimetres of rain, 13% below the normal of 650.7 millimetres for the period.
Of the country's four homogeneous regions, east and northeast India, and northwest India registered "deficient" rains Monday. While central India received "large excess" rains and south India registered "excess" rains Monday.
The east and northeast region received 24% below normal rainfall at 8.5 millimetres and south India recorded 44% above normal rainfall at 8.6 millimetres. Meanwhile, central India received 62% above normal rains at 14.1 millimetres and northwest India recorded 3.6 millimetres of rainfall, 37% below normal.
Monday, central India received 14.1 millimetres of showers, 62% above its normal rainfall of 8.7 millimetres. Eight out of the 10 subdivisions in the region recorded either "large deficient" or "deficient" rainfall except Chhattisgarh and Odisha. Chhattisgarh received the highest rainfall at 37.2 millimetres, which was 365% above normal and Odisha registered 35.6 millimetres, 409% above normal, according to the weather bureau's data.
Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall was "deficient" in 13, "large deficient" in seven, "excess" in four, "large excess" in six, and "normal" in five. There was no rain in one sub-division, according to the data. End
