--Govt opens exports of wheat, wheat pdts, effective immediately
NEW DELHI – The government has allowed free exports of wheat and related products, including wheat flour and semolina, effective immediately, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said Monday. Previously, the government permitted exports of these commodities, but restricted them through quotas.
On Monday, the commerce department amended the export policy of wheat, durum wheat, atta or wheat flour, rava or semolina, wholemeal atta, and resultant atta as 'free'. This means that exports are free and not subject to government-approved allocations or quotas, according to experts.
In February, the government allowed 2.5 million tonnes of wheat to be shipped out of the country. It also allowed exports of an additional 500,000 tonnes of wheat products, over and above the 500,000 tonnes announced on Jan. 16. India had curbed wheat exports in May 2022.
However, wheat exports were not shaping up well because of operational issues related to quota applications and approvals, according to experts. The government has enabled free exports of wheat and related products amid availability of abundant stocks in domestic markets.
As of Aug. 1, Food Corp. of India's wheat stocks were substantially higher on year and exceeding the buffer norm. FCI's wheat opening stock for August was 50.5 million tonnes, up 46% on year amid robust wheat procurement from farmers. For the 2026-27 rabi marketing season started in April, the government purchased 35.76 million tonnes of wheat, up over 19% on year and exceeding the revised target of 34.60 million tonnes. End
