NEW DELHI – India Infrastructure Finance Co. Ltd. has raised $200 million from overseas markets, kick-starting its $1.8-billion external commercial borrowing planned for 2026-27 (Apr-Mar).

"The Company is pursuing opportunities across international financial markets with a focus on competitive pricing, prudent risk management and mobilisation of long-term resources to support India's infrastructure financing requirements," IIFCL said Sunday.

According to the release, IIFCL plans to raise around $1 billion through long-term external commercial borrowings with tenors of up to 15 years, under the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency's Guarantee Facility, in multiple tranches. "The proposed long-term funding will support infrastructure projects with long gestation periods and further strengthen IIFCL's capacity to provide long-term financing to the sector," it said.

"We remain committed to executing the programme within the stipulated timeframe and supporting the country's infrastructure financing requirements," Managing Director Rohit Rishi said.

The overseas borrowing plan is part of IIFCL's overall ambitious resource mobilisation programme of INR 342 billion for FY27 to support the growing financing requirements of India's infrastructure sector. This is over double the INR 150 billion raised in FY26. "IIFCL will continue to deepen its access to domestic and international sources of capital and mobilise long-term resources to support India's infrastructure development," the company said.

IIFCL, which is wholly owned by the government, was established in 2006 to provide long-term financial assistance to infrastructure projects. The company's primary mandate is to finance both greenfield and brownfield projects through direct lending, takeout finance, refinancing, and credit enhancement across infrastructure sectors. The infrastructure lender disbursed INR 330 billion in FY26, up 16% on year, and sanctioned INR 580 billion, up 13% on year. In FY27, IIFCL aims to sanction loans worth INR 750 billion and disburse around INR 390 billion.

The infrastructure financier's latest borrowing aligns with Reserve Bank of India's measures announced in June, including a concessional dollar-rupee swap facility for eligible external commercial borrowings. The facility is expected to make overseas borrowing more appealing by lowering hedging costs, and thus offer another route to secure competitively priced, long-term funding.  End
