MUMBAI – India recorded 7.1 millimetres of rains Sunday, 6% below the normal of 7.6 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 23, the country received 555.3 millimetres of rain, 14% below the normal of 643 millimetres for the period.

Of the country's four homogeneous regions, three regions--northwest India, central India and south India registered "normal" rains Sunday--east and northeast India received "large deficient" rains Sunday.

The east and northeast region received 61% below normal rainfall at 4.3 millimetres and south India recorded 8% below normal rainfall at 5.2 millimetres. Meanwhile, central India received 17% above normal rains at 10.3 millimetres and northwest India recorded 6.3 millimetres of rainfall, 5% above the normal. 

Sunday, Odisha received the highest rainfall at 26.2 millimetres, followed by east Madhya Pradesh at 19.7 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. 

Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 13, "deficient" in six, "excess" in two, "large excess" in five, and "normal" in eight. There was no rain in two sub-divisions, according to the data.  End
