India received 51% below normal rains Sat, season's deficit at 14%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received 3.9 millimetres of rainfall on Saturday, 51% below the normal of 8 millimetres, data from the India Meteorological Department showed. During Jun. 1-Aug. 22, the country recorded 548.2 millimetres of showers, 14% below the normal for the period.
All four homogenous regions in the country continued to record a shortfall in preparation on Saturday. All the active weather systems over the country are concentrated only over the east, northeast, and the northwest parts of India. However, even these systems are unable to trigger sufficient rainfall, leading to a deficit across the country.
Rainfall in south peninsular India was 68% below normal at 2 millimetres. Intense showers in the Andaman and Nicobar Island persisted, with the region recording 303% above normal rainfall at 46.8 millimetres. Rainfall in the rest of the nine subdivisions in the region was "large deficient," according to the data.
Central India received 45% below normal showers at 5 millimetres, while northwest India recorded 36% below normal rainfall at 3.6 millimetres. Rainfall in east and northeast India was 63% below normal at 4.5 millimetres.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 20, "deficient" in nine, "excess" in three, "normal" in two, and "large excess" in one. One subdivision, west Rajasthan, did not receive any rainfall on Saturday, the data showed. End
