MUMBAI – The intensity of rainfall over peninsular India is likely to be subdued over the next one week due to the lack of active weather systems over the region, the India Meteorological Department said. Currently, all active weather systems lie over the east, northeast, and northwest India, and the systems which are likely to develop in the coming days are also restricted to these regions, the weather department said.

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the north Bay of Bengal, off the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast, the weather bureau said. Under its influence, a low pressure area is expected to develop over the same region in the next 24 hours. A low pressure area persists over northeast Madhya Pradesh. These systems are likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Odisha till Friday, the bureau said. Heavy showers are expected to continue over most parts of east India till Thursday, while thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over these regions till Friday. Moderate to severe lightning is expected over Bihar till Sunday, the bureau said.

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Assam, which is expected to cause heavy rainfall over most regions of northeast India till Friday. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely over these regions till Wednesday.

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over north Haryana, the weather department said. This system, along with the monsoon trough, are expected to trigger heavy rainfall over multiple parts of northwest India till Friday. Thunderstorms and lightning are seen continuing over parts of Uttarakhand during the same period.

The presence of the low pressure area over northeast Madhya Pradesh is likely to trigger very heavy rainfall over parts of Chhattisgarh till Sunday, the department said. Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Wednesday, over Vidarbha on Sunday and Monday, and over Chhattisgarh till Sunday. Thunderstorms and lightning are forecast over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh till Wednesday.

Most of peninsular India is expected to continue receiving subdued rainfall over the next one week, the weather department said. Heavy showers are expected over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Monday and Tuesday, over Kerala and Telangana from Sunday to Tuesday, and over Karnataka on Sunday and Monday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are seen over many parts of south peninsular India till Wednesday. Strong surface winds are also likely over parts of Karnataka till Monday and over Andhra Pradesh till Wednesday.

Light to moderate showers are expected to persist over west India till Friday, the department said.  End
